James Paine

Like William Chambers, James Paine, architect, was a pioneer of the country house built in a centred villa. Early in his career Paine was made Clerk of the Works at Nostell Priory, Yorkshire. In 1745 he became the Clerk of the Works at the Queen's House, Greenwich, and in the following year he was made Clerk of the Works at Richmond New Park Lodge.
