In the 1970s, Elmbridge Borough Council rescued the 18th-century ornamental landscape at Painshill in Surrey from complete dereliction by buying up land around the lake between 1974 and 1980. The Council formed the Painshill Park Trust, which has carried out the restoration of the landscape.
