George Stanley Repton, architect, was born on the 30th January 1786 and was the youngest son of Humphrey Repton (1752-1818). Early in his career Repton became a pupil of the London architect John Nash and his first work was the Royal Opera House, Haymarket, in London which he undertook as a pupil of Nash. After 1820 Repton practised independently as an architect and over the next twenty-five years worked on twenty-five commissions. These were largely made up of country houses in the Greek, Palladian and Gothic revival styles. Alterations to existing buildings made up two-thirds of his work and only ten were wholly built to his designs. Commissions included Kitley House which was remodelled in the Elizabethan style and Peamore House, Exeter, which was in the Tudor Gothic (both houses were in Devon). He lived his last thirteen years of his life in retirement and he died at his home on the 29th June 1858 at 27 New Norfolk Street, Park Lane, London.
