The arboretum was created to commemorate the life of Reg Hookway. Hookway was the first director of the Countryside Commision and played a fundamental role in the creation of Rufford Abbey Country Park. The arboretum contains mostly oak and birch varieties.
The arboretum was created in the late 20th century.
