Brief Description
Newark Castle is perched on a hillside just south of Ayr with forested slopes behind it, first planted between 1775 and 1860.
History
Although there was some enclosure by the late-17th century, it seems that the designed landscape at Newark Castle was largely developed during the 18th and 19th centuries. It is possible that there was a formal landscape including an avenue and vistas. By the mid-19th century the remodelled castle stood in a treed park with woodland behind it and a drive approaching from the east.
