James Cox

Cox was a sculptor active in the late-18th century, particularly around 1788.

The goldsmith and entrepreneur was celebrated for his sumptuous 'objets de vertu', particularly those with automaton and watch movements.

In the 1770s Cox managed a private museum in the Great Room at Spring Gardens, London.

Some of Cox's best known works are the Peacock Clock, now in the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, and the Silver Swan, built by Cox in 1773 in conjunction with John Joseph Merlin, which is now exhibited at the Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, Teesdale, County Durham.
