Born in Rastrick, Yorkshire c.1836, worked as a gardener with James Backhouse & Son, York for whom he laid out the gardens at Hutton Hall, Guisborough; Thornbridge Hall, Bakewell; Toulstone Lodge, Tadcaster. Became an indpendent garden designer.
