John Brookes is a writer and a garden and landscape designer. His career started in the mid-20th century.
Brookes was born and educated in Durham, England. He served a 3 year apprenticeship with Nottingham Parks Department as well as worked as an assistant to Branda Colvin. He earned a Diploma of Landscape Design from UCL and worked as assistant to Sylvia Crowe as well as an assistant editor of Architectural Design.
Brookes has been in private practice since 1964 and has lectured widely and written extensively on garden design, in particularly on small town gardens.
