Jean-Baptiste Michel Vallin De La Mothe

Jean Baptiste M. Vallin de la Mothe was a French Architect. He is likely to have studied under the supervision of his cousin, Jacques Fancois Blondel. Vallin de la Mothe studied in Italy between 1750-2 before moving to Russia at the end of the decade.

In 1755, however, Vallin de la Mothe met Henry Herbert, the 10th Earl of Pembroke, in Paris during the Earl's Grand Tour. Vallin de la Mothe submitted architectural designs for Herbert's ancentral home at Wilton House, Wiltshire. Whether or not the designs were implemented has recently been debated.

During Vallin de la Mothe's period in Russia he tought architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts (from 1759) and became the court architect in 1766. He returned to France in 1775.
