Mr Tom Stuart-Smith


Tom Stuart-Smith is a highly acclaimed British garden designer known for his innovative and harmonious designs that seamlessly blend natural landscapes with architectural elements. Born in 1964, he developed a deep passion for gardens and plants from an early age, which ultimately led him to pursue a career in landscape architecture.

Stuart-Smith studied at the University of Edinburgh, where he earned a degree in Zoology before pursuing a postgraduate diploma in Landscape Architecture at the University of Manchester. His educational background in science and landscape architecture provided him with a unique perspective on the interplay between ecology, botany, and design.

In the early stages of his career, Stuart-Smith worked with various landscape architects and gained valuable experience that shaped his design philosophy. His approach emphasizes the importance of understanding the natural environment, respecting local ecosystems, and creating designs that evolve and mature over time. After a period working with landscape architect Hal Moggridge and then Michael Brown, he joined Elizabeth Banks Associates and became a director of the company. He set up his own practice in 1999.

One of his notable projects includes the restoration of the gardens at Trentham Estate in Staffordshire, England. He also worked on the restoration of the arboretum at Eastnor Castle, Herefordshire, and restoration plans for St Paul's Walden Bury in Hertfordshire, Hall Barn in Buckinghamshire and Trewithen in Cornwall and has recently transformed the 19th-century Italian garden at Trentham in Staffordshire, one of the largest formal gardens in England.

Stuart-Smith's visionary redesign transformed the historic gardens, blending contemporary elements with the site's rich heritage, resulting in a landscape that has garnered widespread recognition and accolades.

He has also worked on international projects, showcasing his versatility in adapting his designs to diverse landscapes and cultural contexts. Stuart-Smith's portfolio includes private gardens, public spaces, and collaborations with architects on larger projects, highlighting his ability to create immersive and timeless environments.
