Thomas Machell

The Reverend Thomas Machell, architect, was born in 1647 and was educated at Queen's College, Oxford. Machell was an exponent of classical architecture and attempted to introduce the style to Cumbria, indeed commissions such as Crackenthorpe Hall and Howgill Castle were the earliest house designs of their kind. Machell died in November 1698.
