Oliver Goldsmith

Oliver Goldsmith wrote essays, plays, novels and poetry. His best-known poem, 'The Deserted Village', published in 1770, laments the destruction of idyllic rural life.

It was written after Goldsmith witnessed the removal of the old village of Nuneham Courtenay, Oxfordshire, in 1761 to make way for Lord Harcourt's new landscape garden.
