Kenneth Robert Balfour
Major Kenneth Robert Balfour, MP, (1863-1936) brother of the Lord of the Manor of Sidmouth, bought The Knowle in 1891. In 1882 it had been converted to a hotel, which subsequently failed. Major Balfour revamped it to become a successful hotel business, which flourished until 1968 when it closed and the property sold to Sidmouth Urban District Council.
