John Alexander Ogg Allan was born on 9 May 1870. As well as being a trained architect, he also had considerable knowledge of landscape gardening.
He was architect to the Aberdeen School Board from 1897 to 1905 and after that he began his own practice. He was considered the leading authority on educational architecture.
In 1910 he wrote 'House and Garden: an Essay on the Treatment of Gardens in connection with Buildings', published in the RIBA Journal in July the same year.
