Earl Hoartio Herbert Kitchener began his overseas career with the British army in Egypt and Sudan in 1892. Following service in South Africa (1900-1902) and India (1902-1909), in 1909 Earl Kitchener was made Field Marshal and, at the outbreak of World War 1, was appointed Secretary State of War. He was killed during a diplomatic mission to Russia in 1916.
