A successful day with Somerset Gardens Trust

Members of the Somerset Gardens Trust met at Hestercombe Gardens on Thursday 17th July 2008 for an introductory day to the Parks and Gardens UK website and database. There were six members of the Somerset Gardens Trust, including Anthony Pugh-Thomas, Chairman of the Somerset Gardens Trust, and Primrose Mallett-Harris, Chairman of the Survey sub-committee.

The day was run by John Warden, Data Manager for Parks and Gardens Data Services, ably assisted by Liz Chalstrey, Volunteer Coordinator. Organisation of the venue and attendance was coordinated by Jenny Kent, Secretary of the Survey sub-committee.

The day started with an introduction to the Parks and Gardens UK project and the progress made so far. This was followed by a demonstration of the website, in particular how to use the search facilities to find parks and gardens and to link through from site records to people associated with them.

After lunch the volunteers were guided through the data entry system and shown how to create records of parks and gardens, using descriptions of gardens which they had previously researched. Following a useful and informative question and answer session the attendees spent a pleasant time looking round the gardens at Hestercombe.
