Ask students how they played as young children in a playpark. What can they remember about the play equipment in it? Which was their favourite piece and why? Show students photographs of a selection of new playgrounds and discuss:
- What is play equipment designed to do? What do children do on the equipment? Climb, swing, balance, hang, spin, bounce, walk across, crawl through, slide down, jump over, hide inside…
- What motivates children to play? Challenge, competition, fun, thrill, achievement, interaction, find out, imagine, explore, make and create, role-play…
- How do children play? On their own, in pairs, in groups, with family members…
- What physical skills do they develop through play? Strength, coordination, dexterity, agility, stamina, speed…
- What would teenagers want to do in a park?
