Capability Brown’s revolutionary ‘tree wagon’ brought back to life by landscape designers Taylor Tripp for special exhibition

To celebrate the 300th anniversary of Britain’s legendary landscape gardener, Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown (1716-1786), Taylor Tripp Ltd. are helping sponsor the re-creation of the early ‘tree wagon’ credited with enabling Brown to move trees on an unprecedented scale to create his trademark copses and treescapes.

This hand-made 1:2 scale replica, based on rare 18th century drawings and diagrams, will be featured in the exciting, upcoming Capability Brown: Making the Landscape’ exhibition held in the Winchester Discovery Centre City Space from March 26 to May 15, (

Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown rose from yeoman farming stock to become Royal Gardener to George III and the pre-eminent designer of Britain’s most aristocratic country estates, such as Blenheim Palace, Chatsworth, Highclere Castle and Burghley House. He created a uniquely British style of landscape, based on a lyrical naturalism rather than artificial formality. His talent for making the most of a garden’s ‘capabilities’ earned him his lifelong nickname.

Taylor Tripp Landscape Design Ltd., founded in 1996, is based in Winchester. The group specialise in landscape design and management, creating classic gardens in the grand British tradition. A fixture at the Chelsea Flower Show, their designs for Alitex have won a variety of awards, including ‘Best in Show’ for the stand in 2015.

According to Managing Director Nick Tripp, helping sponsor the ‘Master of Landscape’ exhibition is a labour of love: “As landscape designers we are proud to have been entrusted with such heritage properties as the Capability Brown gardens at Broadlands, former home of Earl Mountbatten and where Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip honeymooned. The harmonious beauty of Brown’s landscapes is a constant source of inspiration.”

Design Director Richard Taylor explains, “Taylor Tripp specialises in creating gardens in the classic British tradition, as inspired by such greats as Capability Brown, with the added benefit of 21st century creativity and technological expertise. We are careful to respect the legacy of historic landscape designs, while offering new ideas to suit the desires of the current custodians.”
