The Historic Landscape Project supports and builds capacity within County Gardens Trusts in working proactively to help conserve England’s historic designed landscapes. It is a well-established project from The Gardens Trust, with funding from Historic England.

The Gardens Trust (The GT) was created in July 2015 following the merger of The Garden History Society and the Association of Gardens Trusts. It acts as a link between the independent County Gardens Trusts, and their combined membership is around 8000. The GT is the statutory consultee for designed landscapes so comments on planning applications that may affect historic parks and gardens, working closely with volunteers in the County Gardens Trusts (CGTs). CGTs are locally-based charities across England caring for designed landscapes, operating independently but linked through The Gardens Trust. In the 21st century, volunteers from the CGTs have a vital role to play in the research, recording, history and conservation of our heritage. Increasingly, CGTs are an important and respected voice offering authoritative advice on historic designed landscapes in the modern world, and the Historic Landscape Project is crucial to achieving this success.

The post is challenging but the experience is exceptional! You will work with a wide range of stakeholders, from CGT volunteers and Gardens Trust members, to Local Authority officers and those of the National Amenity Societies and Historic England. Your role will be to support the Historic Landscape Officer in creating networks, offering training, raising awareness, and growing skills and sustainability. In any week you might be organising venues, liaising with CGT volunteers, drafting guidance materials, running social media, curating our online Resource Hub, collating questionnaire results, nurturing our internal Email discussion group, or delivering presentations. There’s plenty of scope for you to bring your ideas and skills to the role, as well as learn from those you will work with.

We’re looking for a self-starter with enthusiasm, commitment, organisational skills and flexibility. An understanding of heritage and conservation is essential, and ideally a familiarity with the issues around conservation of historic designed landscapes.

Project funding is currently confirmed until end-March 2017 but has consistently been renewed so we are looking for a candidate who seeks work for this period but with a desire to extend the post beyond 2017.

The post is part-time 24.5 hours/week. The postholder will work primarily at home but will need to be available for regular meetings at our London office, and travel to other parts of the country will also be required.
