    Abbotsbury Gardens is a late-19th-century 'sub-tropical' garden, which originally covered 7 hectares. The gardens were much restored in the 1970s and expanded by a further 8 hectares in the 1980s.

  • Scotland , Galashiels

    The early-19th-century house at Abbotsford is set on steep grass terraces overlooking the River Tweed. There are three courtyard gardens attached to it. One is a sloping walled garden, with wide herbaceous borders and a gothic conservatory. There is surviving early-19th-century parkland and woodland on the estate.

    Adlington Hall has a landscape park and woodlands of around 65 hectares. It was created in the 18th century and has a small 20th-century garden. The garden once included many follies and other garden buildings but only a few have survived into the 21st century. These include: Diana's Temple, a square summer house and a shell cottage. The site is now used for corporate events and weddings.

    Allington Castle is one of the most secretive and romantically beautiful castles in Kent. It is sadly now almost engulfed by housing and industrial development. Such is the character of its location, however, and the ingenuity of the landscaping of the mere 6 hectares or so now left as is an oasis.

    Alscot is a landscape park of about 100 hectares. It surrounds a large gothic house dating from 1752, with 19th and 20th-century garden development. There are also formal gardens of about 2 hectares, including a lavender garden, orangery, walled vegetable garden and herb beds.

    Althorp is a 19th-century landscape park with traces of an earlier formal layout and 20th-century gardens. The park covers about 225 hectares within a 5600-hectare agricultural estate.

    Antony has late 18th-century gardens of 30 hectares, which were extensively replanted in the 20th century. The gardens lie within a larger estate of park, woodland and agricultural land. The estate is now in divided ownership, the house and about 12 hectares of the gardens belonging to the National Trust.

    Arbury Hall has an 18th century landscape park with lakes, constructed on the site of a former Augustinian priory. The site covers about 180 hectares, comprising ten hectares of gardens and 170 hectares of parkland and lakes. The gardens in the vicinity of the hall were modified in the 19th and 20th centuries. Features include wisteria, rhododendrons and azaleas, and a rose garden.

    The site at Ardchattan Priory lies on the north shore of Loch Etive and incorporates the ruins of the 13th-century priory. The designed landscape was improved in the 17th century and a few trees remain from that time. The policies were extended in the late-19th century and the present gardens were created during the 20th century. They comprise herbaceous and shrub borders, a rockery, a rose garden and a woodland garden with a wide variety of small trees and shrubs.

    Arley Hall is situated within a landscape park of about 190 hectares. The ornamental garden was created in the 19th and 20th centuries to the south-west of the house. The garden is divided into several distinctive areas, each different but all in a formal style. An arboretum called the Grove lies to the north-east of the house.

    The designed landscape at Arniston House retains features from an early-18th-century formal design, including some drives, fragments of avenues and some specimen trees in the formal wilderness area. There is 19th- and early-20th-century parkland, a 19th-century formal garden on the site of the original wilderness, and a wild garden laid out in the 18th century but further developed in later centuries with tree and shrub planting. The walled garden dates to the mid-18th century.

    Arundel Castle has gardens laid out in the mid-19th century by W A Nesfield and improved in 1904 by Gertrude Jekyll. The gardens are surrounded by a picturesque style landscape park. They were extensively restored in 1987.

    A park, woodland and agricultural estate of about 1400 hectares, originating in the Medieval period with later design by Lancelot Brown. There is a central landscape park of 36 hectares, including 19th-century ornamental gardens occupying about 6 hectares to the south of the house.

    Athelhampton has late-19th- and early-20th-century formal gardens and grounds of around 7 hectares. The gardens have been restored and developed since 1957. They are set beside a 15th- and 16th-century house with significant later alterations.

    Ayton Castle is set on formal terraces above the valley of the River Eye, which flows through the 19th-century parkland. A mid-19th-century pinetum and wood garden are valuable bird and wildlife habitats. The structure of the terraced walled garden survives and there have been late-19th- and 20th-century developments in the gardens. The house is open occasionally during the season.

    The site has the remains of a late-18th-century landscape park covering 83 hectares with 19th- and 20th-century development which at its most extensive was 140 hectares (345 acres). The site is now in divided use.

    Belvoir Castle has partially reconstructed and restored gardens, originally laid out by the 5th Duchess of Rutland in 1799. The individual gardens were much influenced by Italian terraced gardens, which the Duchess observed on her Grand Tour.

    The early 20th-century gardens of Benington Lordship occupy about three hectares around the house, with adjacent parkland of 27 hectares. The gardens include the remains of a Norman castle and moat. There is a rose garden, sunken garden, snowdrop walk and kitchen garden. The 19th-century Norman-style gatehouse and the summerhouse are made of Pulhamite (a type of artificial stone).
