Brief description of site

The arcaded Cloisters consist of knapped flint, dressed stone and English oak. The cross in the centre is designed by Alfred Turner and the central gabled entrance has a Madonna by Charles Wheeler. This is reputedly the largest private war memorial in Europe.

The Garden of Remembrance following Jekyll’s idea was planted up with roses and white lilies in the grass areas where they touched the arcades. Following a revamp in the 1960s much of the Jekyll planting was replaced and following a further, major redesign in 2014 there is sadly almost nothing left of Jekyll’s plan.

Brief history of site

To commemorate the death of 500 Wykehamists who fell in service in the World War 1, Cloisters and a Garden of Remembrance were designed by Herbert Baker, in 1924. Gertrude Jekyll created a planting plan for the Garden, the plan of which still resides in the College Library.
