This site has formal and informal gardens extending into adjacent woodland. This was created in 1892 by Colonel Stephenson Robert Clarke, a plant hunter and collector. More recent planting includes a formal water garden.

The present house was built in 1598. In 1892, the whole estate was bought from a Mrs Cunliffe Lister by Colonel Stephenson Clarke who largely laid out the present gardens and parkland and planted the woodlands with ornamental trees.
