A garden derived from the medieval monastery garden, with herbs for food and medicine, and later developing to include flower and kitchen gardens.
Beningbrough Hall, near York, walled
kitchen garden. The paths are edged with low box hedging, there is a
wide entrance to the garden through the wall which runs from the right
to the centre of the image. This wall also has a lean-to glasshouse.
The main path leads to the distance where a smaller entrance to the
garden is visible. The end of the house is also seen above the top of
the wall. Well-tended plants and trees are growing in the garden. Photograph copyright: John Clark, 2008.
