heliochronometer

A sundial capable of giving an accurate reading of standard time to the minute.

heliochronometer, Spetchley Park, Worcestershire, England

An early 20th- century heliochronometer at Spetchley Park Gardens, Worcestershire, England, photographed by Mr Tony Wood. Photograph copyright: Mr Tony Wood.  Image by kind permission of the British Sundial Society.

The heliochronometer is a precision sundial, which by virtue of a hidden cam mechanism, is able to display 'clock time' with great accuracy, once the date is set.  This particular dial was designed by Pilkington and Gibbs Limited, Preston, England and was supplied by Ross of New Bond Street, London.
